Carmen Artaza

The mezzo-soprano from San Sebastian Carmen Artaza was awarded in January 2021 with the Grand First Prize in the 58th edition of the International Singing Competition Tenor Francesc Viñas and also won in this competition the Mozart Prize and the Audience Award in addition to 3 other special prizes.

 

In the season 2022/23 Artaza returns to the Hannover State Opera where she performs the role of Bradamante in Alcina. At the same theater, Artaza made her debut with the role of Dora- bella in a new production of Così fan tutte.

 

She made her debut at the Komische Oper in Berlin, the return to the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid with the role of Luisa Fernanda in the zarzuela by F. Moreno Torroba and the Berlin Philharmonic; in addition to her collaboration with the Basel Chamber Orchestra in a concert tour of Switzerland and her debut on the stage of the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo.

 

During the 2021/22 season the mezzo-soprano made her debut in theaters such as the Bilbao Opera ABAO with the role of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly and the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid singing the role of Martina in the new production of El ópalo mágico by I.Albeniz. Carmen was part of the Opera Studio of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf and Duisburg where she performed roles such as Flora Bervoix (La Traviata), Kater (Gestiefelter Kater), Grimgerde (The Valkyries) among others.

 

Carmen Artaza is a regular guest at the San Sebastian Musical Fortnight Festival, where in 2022 she sang the 3rd Symphony by G.Mahler conducted by Víctor Pablo Pérez and at the Berlin Philharmonic, where she will perform in the current season the Mass in B-flat Minor by J.S.Bach together with the Berlin Philharmonic Choir and the Batzdorfer Hofkapelle Orchestra.

 

In 2020 Carmen Artaza was once again winner of the first prize at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Competition in Berlin; she also won the first prize, the audience prize and the prize for young talents at the Luis Mariano International Singing Competition in Irun. In 2016 she won a special prize at the 45th edition of the Bundeswetebewerb competition in Berlin.

 

Carmen Artaza studies with the teacher Michelle Breedt. She previously studied at the Munich Conservatory of Music with Christiane Iven and at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has received master classes from Brigitte Fassbaender, Teresa Berganza, Anne Sophie von Otter, Helmuth Deutsch and Christa Ludwig.
