Greek American mezzo-soprano Daveda Karanas has been praised for her “capacious power” and “a voice lustrous and exciting” (San Francisco Chronicle). In the 2024–2025 season, she performed Elgar’s Sea Pictures with LaGrange Symphony Orchestra. The previous season marked her acclaimed house debut at Teatro Real as Liese in The Passenger, leading to an album recording with Deutsche Grammophon and a video release with Television Española.
Notable past performances include her role debut as Kundry in Parsifal at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde with the Canadian Opera Company and Auckland Philharmonia, and Judit in Bluebeard’s Castle at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 and has sung with San Francisco Opera in multiple roles, including Waltraute and the 2nd Norn in Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Other appearances include The Israeli Opera, Oper Frankfurt, Arizona Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Vancouver Opera, and The Glimmerglass Festival.
Ms. Karanas is also a dedicated advocate for underrepresented voices in classical music. Her recital work highlights compositions by Jewish composers affected by the Holocaust, African American composers, and women composers. She will soon release the world premiere recording of Dorothy Rudd Moore’s From the Dark Tower for mezzo-soprano and orchestra.
A Grand Finals Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, she is also a graduate of the San Francisco Opera’s Adler Fellowship, Merola Opera Program, and Music Academy of the West.
