David Menéndez

David Menéndez is one of the most renowned Spanish baritones of his generation.

Born in Castrillón (Asturias), he holds a degree in Music Education from the University of Oviedo. He studied singing with Professor M.ª Dolores Tamargo and later with Ana Luisa Chova at the Joaquín Rodrigo Conservatory in Valencia, finishing his career with the Extraordinary Prize. In 1999 he won the First Prize of the Permanent Competition of Juventudes Musicales de España, and in 2005, the Third Prize of the International Singing Competition Operalia.

He made his debut at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid in the role of Don Carlos in Gaztambide‘s El Juramento. Since then he has performed, among others, the roles of Cecil in Maria Stuarda, Rambaldo in La Rondine, Schaunard in La Bohème, Orbazzano in Tancredi, Melisso in Alcina, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni in the opera of the same name, Taddeo in L’italiana in Algeri, Joaquín in La del Manojo de Rosas, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore and Parmenione in L’ocassione fa il ladro. In August 2003 he appeared at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro as Lord Sydney in Il viaggio a Reims. He has also participated in contemporary music works such as Kirchner‘s Orfeo or in the world premiere of La hija del cielo; and he has performed a wide range of symphonic and oratorio music.

After his successes at the Berliner Philharmonie and his interpretations of Dandini from La Cenerentola at the Greek National Opera and the Opera de Toulon, his debut as Leporello at the Teatro de La Maestranza, Count Almaviva at the Ópera de Oviedo or his successful debuts as Figaro at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and in the title role of Hamlet at the Teatro Campoamor, his next engagements will take him to sing the roles of Dulcamara in L’elisir D’amore, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Marcello in La Bohème, Porsugnacco in Grilletta and Porsugnacco, Beethoven‘s Symphony n. 9 or the Requiem of W.A. Mozart, among others.
